NAF intensifies strikes against Boko Haram insurgents
– The Nigerian Air Force intensified surveillance to find the abducted Chibok girls and other captives
– The NAF destroyed the terrorists’ leadership hideouts and logistics support bases
– The air force carried out 286 combat flights against the insurgents and neutralized a “high value terrorists’ leader”
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has intensified surveillance to find the
abducted Chibok girls and other captives held by Boko Haram in Sambisa
forest, Vanguard reports.
While briefing journalists on Saturday, January 20, in Maiduguri, Air Vice Marshal Isiaka Amao, the deputy theater commander of Operation Lafiya Dole in charge of air component, revealed that the NAF had destroyed the terrorists’ leadership hideouts and logistics support bases.
“In continuation of the counter-terrorism operations under Operation Lafiya Dole, the air component has intensified air strikes against the Boko Haram terrorists.
“The air effort was focused on further degrading the terrorists operational capability as well as command and control structure, restricting their freedom of movement and destroying their logistics support base,’’ he said.
Amao said that the NAF carried out 286 combat flights against the insurgents between December 25, 2015 and now.
“The air operation also intensified surveillance towards locating the abducted Chibok Girls and other citizens that may have been abducted by the terrorists group.
“The missions conducted led to the destruction of newly discovered terrorists hideouts, enclaves, logistics support bases and infrastructure, especially as they flee Sambisa to nearby locations due to aerial bombardments,’’ he said.
According to Amao, notable among the missions during the period was an air strike carried out on December 25, 2015. As a result of the operation, some Boko Haram leaders and junior commanders who gathered for a meeting in Sambisa forest that day were neutralised by a precision strike.
“Post-strike assessment indicated that over 15 terrorists were killed,’’ he added.
Amao said that the air force also conducted several interdiction missions against terrorists’ targets on part of Sambisa forest. He noted that the most significant strike was conducted on January 17 on the location of a “high value terrorists’ leader” taking refuge at a location south of Arra in Sambisa forest.
Meanwhile, the chief of air staff, Sadique Abubakar, has recently disclosed that the NAF is revamping its operations against Boko Haram fighters by establishing a special forces command.
According to Abubakar, it will facilitate the development of NAF’s response capability in both internal and external security operations.
