Thibaut Courtois wants ‘The Blues’ to reach the Champions League final
– Admits Chelsea had too many draws this season
– The no. 1 shot stopper is optimistic Chelsea can still make the top four on the EPL table
Thibaut Courtois has disclosed that Chelsea football club of England
must get to the final of the UEFA Champions League and the FA Cup or at
least one of them to ensure they end the season well.
The Blues’ no. 1 shot-stopper disclosed this to journalists after
Sunday’s 1 – 1 Premier League draw against Manchester United at Stamford
Bridge.
The EPL defending Champions Chelsea are currently placed 13th on the
log this season having lost nine games, drawn nine and won just seven of
their 25 games played so far in the league.
Guus Hiddink’s men will clash against French champions Paris
Saint-Germain at the same stage this month, having lost to the same team
last season at this same stage, while they host Manchester City in the
fifth round of the FA Cup.
Under the interim manager, The Blues have played nine games unbeaten, but have drawn six of those fixtures.
“We’ve had too many draws to climb the table. The Newcastle game is a very important one where we have to get the three points,” Courtois told the club’s website (www.chelseafc.com).
“After that we play in the Champions League and FA Cup against
two great sides and we have to try to win those games because the only
way to save our season is to reach the final in one or both of them.”
Despite the fact that Chelsea are 17 points away from fourth-placed
Manchester City with 13 games left, Cesar Azpilicueta believes it is
still possible for the team to make it to next season’s Champions
League.
He said: “Obviously every time we don’t win and there is one game
less, there is less chance to get into the top four. We will see where
we are with five-six games in a row and see whether we can get there or
not.”
“We are trying and will always try to make it. We also have the
path of winning the Champions League (to qualify) and we have a tough
game coming up against PSG. We will try both ways to get into the
Champions League this season.”
