NCC fine: Reports of N300bn settlement not true, MTN says

MTN Nigeria says that reports making the rounds that it has proposed to pay only N300 billion of the N780 NCC fine were not true, as negotiations are still ongoing.
The company in a statement on Saturday in Lagos noted that such reports were premature of the as an agreement had not been reached by both parties in the negotiation.
The statement signed by Mr Ferdi Moolman, MTN Nigeria’s Chief Executive Officer said “The management of MTN Nigeria is aware of the reports on the settlement negotiations. The confidential negotiations are still very much ongoing with the authorities to achieve an amicable resolution of the matter.

”Accordingly‎, no further comment can be made at this time,” the statement quoted Moolman as saying.
It would be recalled that reports had emerged that MTN after paying $251 million (N50 billion) of the fine as a goodwill gesture had proposed to pay only N300 billion within a four-year period.
The Senate Committee on Communications, headed by Sen. Gilbert Nnaji, on Thursday, March 10 revealed how the Minister of Communications, Mr Adebayo Shittu and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) were sidelined in the process of negotiation.
